Reiki and Four Building Blocks for the Future
Belonging and Change. Challenge and Opportunity. Four building blocks with which we as individuals and as Reiki communities can shape the next centuries! What is the nature of these "building blocks" without physical form? What esoteric honey can secure them within a structure of healing and nurturance as we as Reiki practitioners embrace the new millennium?
BELONGING AND CHANGE
In a most basic sense, it is from "belonging" that our identity and meaning in life emerges. In the practice of Reiki, we find that we belong to ourselves, but not to ourselves alone. As we move into the year 2,000 and beyond, we may realize anew how deeply we are all connected in the web of life. We can spin dreams and hopes with wisdom that rekindles a spirit of optimism, re-creates community, and makes healing changes for many generations to come.
We look to the future and make our plans. We also must look inside, for as Takata said . . . "First Heal Yourself . . .." Positive change today, and in the next millennium, starts with self-transformation. And self-change is one essential item for millennial scouts and leaders.Reiki practitioners must ever walk the sometimes bumpy road of inner vision, "consciously".
In our own ways, as Reiki unfolds in our lives, each of us is called upon to lead, to envision the future, and to contribute to its design. We all must traverse that inner course to freedom in order to belong, in any real sense, to the human family. We have always known that Reiki, the Usui System of Natural Healing is like a shining guidepost . . . a torchlight to dispel illusion. As the new century unfolds we, as a larger and larger community, more and more aware of the "essence" of Reiki, can only understand with greater appreciation how Reiki "is" the very life-breath of belonging and of change . . . teaching us how wealthy we are within. It can only become easier and easier to discard the clinking breastplates that once shielded hearts weakened by attitudes of fear and lack. It can only become easier and easier to open to possibility and real connections with one another. Beyond these "connections" we will continue to discover that Reiki practice leads to a deep resonance with Something Much Larger than ourselves. This discovery is both a challenge and an opportunity.
CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY
These may be the by-words of the new millennium. Reiki understands that Pain ["dis-ease", fear, suffering] is an ordinary experience of humankind . . .neither bad nor good, but part of the process . . .the challenge, the opportunity. The choice of perception is ours. If we choose to view Pain as a chance to open our hearts (and I think this is what Reiki practice teaches us more and more as the years go by) the "painful" aspects of fear and suffering diminish. A pattern of avoiding what is unwanted in our lives changes, freeing us. If we accept the challenge of ceasing to resist pain out of fear, we come to see that actually pain can be "the great dissolver of illusion." Pain and fear turn out to be no more than a challenge issued by "opportunity!
"The challenge? Extend yourself. Disclose yourself . . .to yourself, to others, and to the global community. Accept yourself now. Accept others with compassion. Release what you once have found unacceptable about yourself and in others. Contemplate what is "possible!" Be well! This is the enterprise of belonging and change. One gift of Reiki practice (that we may come to enjoy even more in the years to come) in this endeavor, is strength, Strength to regard what is before us, strength to jettison judgmental attitudes based on what we perceive as good or bad. Strength to become partners in a place of sharing. There is room. There is unity in diversity. The year 2,000 and those to follow are about this very "essence" . . . the essence of Reiki.
Strongly the practice of Reiki moves us to partnership and participation as we mature in years and in the process. Participating in the architectural design of the 21st Century means hurdling the barricades of separateness, sharing feelings and ideas, honoring and making room for global family members, and applauding our larger family ties. Laying the building blocks of commitment to belonging to "self in community," to opening through loving kindness, to celebrating the pure potential of a working strategy for the future, rests on preparing the level ground of balance in integrity. As our Reiki community matures in the new millennium, we will broaden our understanding that transforming the ills of the world does not mean, "curing" them. Rather it means seeking balance. When we no longer need to cure Pain, dis-ease, untenable situations in our lives, societal ills, or planetary destruction, we can "trust the process" of placing those building blocks for the future with our sights (and insights) clearly set on the Highest Good of All Concerned.
