Ride the Wind and Fly

Once there was a small green bird. She looked up into the sky and called for a larger bird to help her fly higher than before, for her family of birds said, "The time has come for you, green bird to leave the nest".

When she heard these words she was puzzled and angry. Why should she have to leave the comfort of the nest? She asked mama bird who looked at her with pride and said, "It is time now. You are ready."

"But mama bird," she squeaked in a high pitched call. "How can you do this to me? How do I know I will survive with what I was taught?"

Mama bird answered, "Listen inside and you will know. You are strong and you will find your way. The other day your bird song was rich and deep and you announced that you were ready to go out on your own".

"But Mama bird. How do I know? How do I know I will not get swept into a mountain side and dash myself to pieces on a sharp craggy rock? I need more information. Please. Then I will go."

Mama bird took her beak and pushed the small green bird out of the nest and saw her fly into the wind. She knew she will be fine with the winds that blow through the trees.

The little green bird fluttered a bit and landed on the ground after a short flight. She was angry with mama bird. She was not ready. She thought she did not know enough. She wanted to stay within the safety of the nest.

Anger filled her belly and she cried out, "How can I be angry with mama bird who loves me so? This is wrong". So the anger went deep inside and gave her a belly ache.

The next day she saw her friend, the mountain lion. She roared and said, "Little green bird, be brave. The answers are inside you. I too must leave you now until another time when you need me for courage. Look into my eyes and be brave."

The little green bird roared with the mountain lion until she was left alone. "Where are you going mountain lion? Everyone is leaving me?" "I go to my cave to rest and gather strength. Let out your anger little green bird and we will roar together."

The little green bird said, "But I can't be angry with mama bird". The mountain lion said, "Do you FEEL angry?" "Oh yes, the little green bird answered, "I feel angry still but every day I do my best not to be angry". The mountain lion said, "Instead, do your best to not hold onto anger, then your song will be bright."

"Ah, said the little green bird. Now I understand". So she roared and anger came out of her belly and then a beautiful ray of sunlight caressed her feathers.

The little green bird began to chirp happily. "Thank you mountain lion. Now I understand," she chirped as the mountain lion walked up the path.

Night began to come. The little green bird began to worry. "Now I chase my own feathers in a circle with this worry, "she cried. "How will I find food? Where will I sleep? What if it's too cold?"

She found the home of a squirrel and started to take his food. "Hey, little bird. "Do you think that is honest?" "Well no, said the little green bird but I am hungry. What shall I do?" The squirrel pointed to some pine nuts on the ground. "See said the squirrel. They were there all the time and you were too busy with worry to see them".

"I'm sorry squirrel," said the little green bird. Thank you for your kindness. I will not take food from another living being again".

But she started to worry again about other creatures in the night, where to sleep and the cold night air. Then she began to fly and met an owl. "Ah owl, you are wise, what shall I do?" "Ah little green bird, surely you fly in circles, your chirps are getting softer and softer. Worry is wearing you out. Let me show you something. Come with me.

Little green bird left her worry on a broken branch of a dead tree struck by lightening and flew to meet the owl. "Come ride on my back awhile, I am a night owl".

Delighted, the little green bird hopped onto the owl's back. They started flying higher and higher. "Listen to the wind", the owl said. "The wind is quiet now, said the little green bird. "I don't hear anything". "Ah, said the owl, "to listen you must go into the spaces between time...In that moment all possibilities are born."

"Oh, said the little green bird. "This is a familiar place. It is within me. All this time I looked outside myself". The little green bird felt joy and honor for mama bird, for the teachers of mountain lion and the owl, and the older birds.

Suddenly the owl gently pushed her into the wind. "Help, owl, I am still young. I have much to learn". The owl answered, "I will tell you one more thing and then I leave you for you have inner knowing and that will take you far".

"Ride the currents of energy in the wind. Surrender in each moment and you will know how to move in harmony with the wind wherever it takes you. It can never harm you and I know you will find your way".

"Ah, said the little green bird. "I understand", as she found the currents of energy and rode the wind, her heart full of gratitude for every living thing.
